Shahram Homayoun is an Iranian-American political activist, journalist, and the founder of Channel One, a Persian-language satellite television network based in Los Angeles that broadcasts daily into Iran. He fled Iran in 1991 due to his outspoken support for democracy and human rights, becoming a marked man under the Islamic Republic regime. Since settling in Los Angeles, he has been a prominent voice for Iranian opposition and activism in the diaspora. In Iran, Homayoun held significant editorial roles, including Editor of Hamkari Magazine for two years, Editor of Kargaran (Workers) Magazine for three years, and Associate Editor of the daily Bamdad (Morning) Newspaper for two years. His journalistic career featured notable interviews with figures such as Sadegh Ghotbzadeh, Sadegh Khalkhali, Ahmad Khomeini (son of Ayatollah Khomeini), Ayatollah Shariatmadari, Ayatollah Sadegh Rohani, Yasser Arafat, and Pakistan’s General Zia ul-Haq. Homayoun established Channel One to provide uncensored news and analysis to Iranians, countering state-controlled media. The network has featured contributions from other dissidents like Alireza Nourizadeh and Mohsen Sazegara. He also founded the “Ma Hastim” (We Exist) movement, which gained traction during the 2009 Green Movement protests in Iran. The movement organized gatherings in Los Angeles and supported Iranian demonstrators by disseminating information and amplifying their voices through satellite broadcasts. In a symbolic act of remembrance, the Ma Hastim movement, with support from its followers, established a memorial in New York City honoring Iranian dissidents and political activists who have been killed by the Iranian government since 2009. This includes individuals like Neda Agha Soltan, whose death became a symbol of the regime’s repression. A staunch advocate of Iranian nationalism, Homayoun has been instrumental in promoting the historical “Lion and Sun” flag, distinguishing it from the Islamic Republic’s symbols. He supports regime change in Iran and believes that the Iranian government should face international sanctions and isolation akin to the measures imposed on apartheid-era South Africa. Despite facing an Interpol Red Notice issued by Iran, Homayoun remains active in his advocacy. U.S. authorities have assured him of his safety within the United States.
