Allahyar Kangarlou is a distinguished physicist and neuroscientist whose academic journey spans a PhD in physics from the University of Missouri (1987) and roles as assistant professor at the University of Dayton and senior MRI physics lead at Columbia University’s psychiatry department. In the mid-1990s, he helped develop one of the most powerful MRI systems, profoundly advancing brain imaging and research into mental illness . Beyond his technical work, Kangarlou is a public intellectual deeply engaged in Iranian political and social discourse—founding the “Phoenix Iran” think tank and the IDEA institute to explore democracy, education, and the interplay of science and religion in society—with his lectures and interviews widely available online .
