Akbar Abdi, one of Iran’s most recognizable actors and comedians, died on July 24, 2026, after a career spanning more than four decades. He was admired for his comic timing, expressive performances and ability to play a wide variety of characters.
Born in Tehran in 1960, Abdi began his artistic career in amateur theater before entering television and cinema. He became popular during the 1980s through appearances in television programs and successful films such as The Tenants, The Grand Cinema and O Iran.
Although he was best known for comedy, Abdi also proved that he could perform serious and emotional roles. His memorable performance as Gholamreza in Ali Hatami’s Mother demonstrated his dramatic ability. He also attracted significant attention for his transformation in Snowman, in which he used makeup, costume, movement and voice to portray a very different character.
Other well-known works in his long filmography include The Actor, Once Upon a Time, Cinema, The Outcasts and I Feel Sleepy. His performances in Mother and I Feel Sleepy earned him Crystal Simorgh awards at the Fajr Film Festival.
Abdi’s appeal came from his ability to combine humor with genuine emotion. Even when portraying unusual or exaggerated characters, he made them feel familiar and human. His facial expressions, distinctive voice and physical comedy made many of his roles instantly recognizable.
